Recently Eunoia Rescue, a local 501(c)(3) foster-based rescue, assisted with an unfortunate situation involving 130 dogs on a single property. The owner started with two dogs less than five years ago-- they quickly multiplied and the owner found themselves unable to provide proper care for the pug army. Several rescues have come together over the course of the past several months to slowly and safely remove the dogs from the property and begin rehabilitating them.

From June 12-13th, Eunoia, along with the help of Paws and Claws Animal Clinic, spent over 30 hours picking up 17 of the pugs and triaging them. Each pup required an initial medical assessment, vaccinations, microchip, nail trim, prevention-- the works! Many of the pugs had severe skin and ear infections. Some had nails so long, they were curling under and growing into their paw pads. Several had eyes caked over in green goo. It was a feat in and of itself just getting them cleaned up and initially vetted. After they received their first round of medical attention, they left for foster homes!

In foster, the 17 amazing families from the community who opened their hearts and homes to these pups began working on socializing them and teaching them how to be dogs. Work began with showing them that walking on a leash was okay and actually fun! They learned that it’s only acceptable to go potty outside but most importantly, they learned what love is, and that humans are actually pretty good at cuddling!

Once they were feeling better physically and mentally, it was time for a make-over. Sarah Jackson, owner of Barks n Bubbles in West Ashley, has been a strong supporter of Eunoia for many years. She donated hours and hours of her time towards getting the pugs looking their best! Not only did she do an amazing job grooming the pups, but she also did it completely pro bono!

These little dogs have a very large community rooting for them! Not all the dogs are up for adoption at this time, but many are so check Eunoia’s website for more information or their social accounts (links below). As delighted as we are to have these pups with us, we are saddened by how they got here. This is just another reminder of how important spaying and neutering your pets is. If you or someone you know has an unaltered pet that you would like to have spayed/neutered and you cannot afford the surgery, please email info@eunoiarescue.com to explore some options.
