Review: Buckle-Down Collar & Leash

Ahoy you scurvy dogs! We're reviewing Buckle Down Dog Collars and Leads, their "Dead Men Tell No Tails" line in particular. It's perfect for Charleston's sea legged salty dogs and land lubbers alike. As usual, we're also giving one of these collars away to one lucky winner ( you can choose the pirate theme, or another of your preference). To enter, just comment here on the contest page, and for a second entry, comment on our Facebook page HERE. We'll pick a winner next Friday the 22nd. May the seas bring you fortune!

LCD Reviewer: Jennifer Heisler and her motley, but loveable, crew of rescues

From almost the moment I opened the package, the Buckle-Down collar and leash became my favorites! The colors are bright and the designs are modern and edgy. My personal favorite for my nautical dogs is the “Dead Men Tell No Tales” pirate theme.

True to its name, the Buckle-Down collar the pack tested features an old-school miniature seatbelt buckle with an adorable bone in the middle. It’s a solid metal buckle and unlikely to break, as I’ve seen happen with the plastic buckles used for large dog collars. The webbing on the collar and leash is solid and strong, and holds up to the strain of larger dogs. What I especially like is that, once adjusted to size, the collar doesn’t slip, a common issue. Their collars are made with one of three different widths of nylon webbing, ½-inch, 1-inch, or 1½-inches. The narrow collar uses a plastic buckle and can be shortened for a six-inch neck.

The four-foot leash feels soft but substantial in your hand—it’s made from the same 1-inch nylon seatbelt webbing as the collar the pack tested and has the same kind of edgy graphics. Buckle-Down even makes collars and leashes in holiday designs so your pet can keep making a statement all year long. I also like that they’re made in the USA.

Score

Pros: Collar doesn’t slip, Great designs, Strong buckle

Cons: The ½ inch collars have plastic buckles

LCD Reviewer: Susie Armstrong and her pack of labs

Buckle Down proclaims their collars and leads as “fashionable yet functional". I found them to be that and more! Buckle Down’s line of collars features seatbelt buckles as the closures. One great feature about the seatbelt buckle is that you hear the parts snap into place. Throughout the time that we tested the collar, the seatbelt buckle stayed secure and in place. The collar also features a welded D ring, which is great because I have had collars before where it was not welded and when the dog pulled, the ring came out and the leash was no longer attached to the dog!

The most fun part of the buckle down collars and leads are the fun designs!! There are over 500 different patterns to choose from!! This is great because your dog’s collar can be unique! I chose a pirate themed collar and lead that proclaim, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” perfect for pirate loving Charleston. They have a lot of tattoo and car logo designs which my husband, Greg, thought were especially cool.

Buckle Down makes a great product with lots of unique designs!

Score:

Pros: Buckle Down makes collars in XL sizes for larger dogs, buckle and nylon felt very strong and safe, buckles are recycled/refurbished, great price point, manufactured in the US.

Cons: None so far, I am concerned about the durability of the buckle once it is exposed to salt water a few times at the beach (wondering if the inside would get rusty and not function properly)

These look really cool and I am looking forward to trying one. I like the looks of it and the idea of that quick release because my dogs do agility and I like to be able to get the collar of quickly when we go into the ring to compete.

Would love to be the lucky winner of one of the collars. I can test it out and if I like it, will certainly recommend to my canine students.

I would love to win one. I may have to order one anyway. There are some many cool choices to choose from.

I would love to try one of these out on my golden Hank. He is rather a swashbuckling type himself...charming, debonair all while pilfering the dinner meal on his way out the doggy door. Another great reason to award one to my household is that having 5 dogs (3 mine, 2 fosters) makes it rather expensive to keep them all in the latest fashions so if we won it would also help us maintain the family finances while keeping my dogs looking their best.

Would love to win this for my lab-mix Emma! One of the reviewers mentioned that the collar does not slip once sized, which would be great we seem to be readjusting our collars often. Thanks LCD!

I LOVE these collars! I've never seen so many unique designs to choose from and the coolest buckles ever! Not only are the buckles stylin' but they have the strongest hold of any buckle I have seen.

AWESOME COLLARS.. We love the colors and designs. Our Golden Retriever Shayda loves the water and any chance she gets she wants to be near it. I am sure she would be a pirate's dog if they were still around.

by Karen (not verified) | Thursday, April 21st, 2011 at 3:58pm

Very cool design! My Harley dog has been needing a new collar, and the pirate theme suits him SO well!
