Event Recap: Pet Helpers Oyster Roast

A warm afternoon gave way to a wonderfully pleasant evening on Saturday, March 20, for a downtown Oyster Roast to benefit Pet Helpers. The annual event was started nine years ago in tribute to the beloved dog of Julie Limehouse of Rosebank Farms Café. This year’s affair was attended by 450 supporters in their shirt sleeves, oyster knives in hand to shuck local clusters steamed by Fatboy’s Lowcountry Cooking.

Thanks to several generous sponsors and some very lively bidding on auction prizes, the event raised $25,000 for Pet Helpers and featured Crosby’s Seafood oysters, Lowcountry Boil, hot dogs, and of course veggie dogs and veggie chili too! The Shakin’ Martinis kept the night rocking while some of the kids in attendance wowed the crowd with a few new dance moves. Dogs worked the crowd happily, hoping for a careless human to let a delicious morsel fall to the floor. Elizabeth Grace Occasions put an extra shine on the evening with details and décor that defined ‘oyster roast chic.’

“We were thrilled with the event and hope to continue this spring tradition at the Visitor Center for many years to come,” said Executive Director Suzanne Carr, “We’re always excited to spend a fun evening with our supporters and their pets!”

Pet Helpers exists solely on private donations, with the Oyster Roast being the second largest fundraiser of the year. The organization aims to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs in the Lowcountry and works to accomplish this goal by keeping all animals until adopted, providing low cost spay/neuter surgeries, offering humane education programs, pursuing animal cruelty prosecution, and initiating animal welfare legislation.
