DIY: Dog Biscuits in a Jar

Earlier this summer, I received one of the nicest gifts from a client in honor of ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day.’ It was a regular Mason jar layered with various textures and colors, topped with a red-and-white checked square, a recipe and a note reading, ‘Thank you! For all that you give our pups, here’s something to give your own- Homemade Dog Biscuits in a Jar.’ Not only was I so touched by the kind gesture, but I thought to myself, ‘What a great gift idea for all of my pet-loving friends!’

So here’s a fun, crafty project for the next time you need a creative gift- and it’s one that even the kids will love!

Layer the ingredients below- in the order listed- in a 1qt. jar, pressing each layer firmly before adding the next. Put the lid on the jar, then secure a piece of fun fabric with a piece of thin ribbon or raffia.

  • 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 cup powdered milk
  • 2/3 cup quick oats
  • 1/3 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 T. beef bouillon granules

Attach a card to the jar with the following directions:

 Scrumptious Homemade Dog Biscuits -

Empty the mix into a bowl, and stir the ingredients together. Cut in 1/2 cup shortening. Mix in l large, lightly beaten egg + 3/4 cup hot water. Knead the dough for 5 minutes. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for one half hour. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough 1/2" thick and cut into dog bone shapes. Place on a microwave-safe plate and microwave at 50% power for 5 minutes. Turn biscuits over and microwave at 50% power for 2 more minutes. Repeat with remaining dough. Place biscuits on wire racks to cool and harden for a few hours before storing in an airtight container. Bon Apetit!

This is such a great idea! I have a lot of friends who are big dog lovers, this would be perfect for when they all feel the need to "celebrate" their pets birthday! Thanks for this great idea!
