Creating Play Drive
Thanks to Mr. Dolittle (Ric Simmons) for getting me and my dogs out of a rut with our toys via his latest blog about stuffed toys. I haven’t given my dogs stuffed toys to play with in years. I am a firm believer of the indestructible toys and puzzles and use them religiously. However, after reading his blog, I was reminded how much my dogs love to destroy, and how instinctual it is for them to rip and shred things. As long as they are 100% supervised while ripping toys apart, why not let them indulge every now and again?! Thanks Dolittles! I would also like to add that your dog should play with stuffed toys made specifically for dogs…..not stuffed toys made for children. Children’s stuffed animals are being made with a fire retardant gel that can kill your dog if ingested. Give that bag of stuffed animals you bought at the thrift store for $1 to your kids, friends’ kids, nieces, nephews, etc., not your dogs!
There is also help for those of you that have already purchased these expensive, ‘indestructible’ toys and chews, and fiind your dog a little bored by them. Rub your hands all over them, put them in your pockets, hide them in the bag of dog food for a day or so, or soak them in chicken broth. Appeal to his playful side and his prey drive. Play with your dog with these toys. Create a drive for the toys. Try throwing the toy or chew up in the air and catch it yourself, not letting your pup have it at first. Play catch with a family member or friend – playing keep away from the dog for a little while. Sit on the floor with your leg bent and knee to the ceiling and move the toy back and forth on each side of your leg – every time your dog tries to get it, move it so he can’t. Have the dog go through your legs while standing, to get the toy by enticing him to do so. Sit on the edge of a chair and create a tunnel with your legs and encourage your dog to go through as you toss the toy for him to chase. Wiggle the toy around; make it interesting. Some may even go as far as to pretend they are chewing on the toy themselves!
Dogs, like people, often want what they can’t have and this drive usually increases when they see someone else having so much fun with the ‘foreign object’ they never wanted before. Use this to your advantage when attempting to get your dog to play with toys. If your dog doesn’t seem to play with toys very much, even with the stuffed, easy to destroy toys, these methods can help you and your dog also. If it works at first, and your dog gets interested in the toy, but only for a few minutes then looses interest, repeat the steps. Not only are you building a play drive for your dog, you are interacting with him in a fun and productive way, showing him you are willing to fulfill his needs as a dog, and not just your needs as a person with a furry companion.
