The Considerate Canine: Minding Manners
The Problem: My dog (a 50lb Shepherd/Collie mix) forgets her manners and jumps on people when she's excited and happy to see someone. I have a frail elderly mother, and I'm worried about my dog knocking her down. Biscuit will stop jumping, obey and sit/down when I'm there, but how can I get the dog to obey my mother as well and not jump on Mom when I'm not there? -Audra Rourk
The Solution:
Audra, I absolutely feel your stress. My mom lives with me and my two dogs as well, but if I call her frail and elderly, I’ll be in big trouble. It is as much a concern when older people live with dogs, large or small, as it is with young children.
The first step is management while you really begin to work on teaching Biscuit to listen to people other than yourself. When you are not around to supervise, it is a good idea to have Biscuit in an area that your mom is not likely to frequent. Crates are a good option for this, it keeps both of them out of trouble.
Teach Biscuit that the only thing that works is a sit and 4 feet on the floor. You will have to really work on this until it is second nature for her. Jumping is a very self rewarding behavior for many dogs, since it gets them the attention they are seeking. Many people will touch a jumping dog to push them away, and our hands just encourage them to continue. With others, just having a human talking to them is enough to encourage the lift off.
I would begin by having Biscuit sit for everything: dinner, going outside, petting, playing with a toy, just as if she were an untrained pup. If she wants or needs it, she must sit and remain seated until released. Have her sit every time she approaches you, cue it for now, but then fade the cue when she begins to offer the behavior. If you are sitting on the sofa, ask her to sit when she is a couple of feet away, then invite her to come to you for attention or to get on the sofa. After all, it is polite to ask for attention rather than to demand it.
Set up scenarios to practice:
- Go outside and run back through the door, she will be excited, possibly ready to jump but you will cue the sit before she has a chance to lift off.
- Get her excited by playing, then stop and ask for an immediate sit.
- Have friends come over and have them ask for the sit before she jumps, you’ll be there to encourage and support her. In this case, you could give her a food reward, then release her to say hello to your friend.
When she is successful with friends and different scenarios, you are ready to start working with your mom. Initially, you should be there to supervise and intervene if necessary. Have you mom play the role that your friends have been doing. She asks for the sit, you deliver a tasty treat and then release her to greet your mom. As they get more comfortable and depending on your mom’s ability and desire to work with Biscuit, she might be able to feed her, asking for the sit/stay before the food goes onto the floor, before the door is opened, etc.
Consistency is the key to helping Biscuit learn that sitting is the best thing she can do. Reward her a lot in the beginning, she has a history of jumping so don’t expect her to stop unless there is something in it for her. You can certainly use food as a reward, even feeding her meals one piece of kibble at a time. If she is toy or play motivated, use that as well, the same with attention.
Once she learns that jumping gets nothing, she will be on her way to being a more mannerly dog, not just for your mother, but for everyone else as well.
