The Solution:
Isn't it interesting how often a natural dog behavior can make us very unhappy? Whether it is digging, barking or chasing squirrels, it is just dog behavior.
That being said it doesn’t make it any easier when your dog is excavating the garden. It is often much easier to teach a dog what to do than what not to do. A fairly simple solution is to give your dog an appropriate place to dig.
Create a digging pit using a few landscape timbers and sand from the local home store. Once you have your “sandbox” ready, take some really great doggie things and bury them. You can use bones, balls, rubber toys, anything that your dog will love to find. You can have someone hold your dogs leash or tether him, safely, so that he can watch you hide the bones. When everything is ready, get him excited and take him to the sandbox to dig. In the beginning you may have to help him a little (after all, he has been told not to dig). Once he has found a buried object, have a party! You can even supplement his finds with a really yummy treat.
Make sure that you encourage him and reward him for digging in his sandbox. If he makes a mistake, simply take him to his spot and remind him to dig there. Be vigilant in the beginning so that he has little chance to make the wrong choice. It is also a good idea to have some type of cover for the area when not in use to discourage the neighborhood cats from taking advantage of the soft sand.
