Charleston Area Great Dane Rescue Adoptable Dogs

Meet the dogs of the Charleston Area Great Dane Rescue! CSCAGDR is a small rescue located outside of Charleston, SC. They have Great Danes and occasionally other breeds available for adoption. All animals are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and heartworm negative before being placed into an adoptive home.

1. Nina

• Nina was found dodging traffic on a busy road in the pouring rain. Shortly after she was rescued we realized she was pregnant. She gave birth to 11 puppies on Feb. 1st, 2010. 10 of the puppies have found wonderful loving homes (Trouble is still waiting). Nina never should have had a litter - she is just a puppy herself! She was a wonderful mom and did a great job raising her puppies with very little help. She is a very playful, fun-loving girl. Nina is now living the puppyhood that she probably never had prior to arriving at the rescue. We thought she wanted to move out for a while - she took a bunch of blankets and dog toys and made a little nest for herself out in the yard. But, it turns out that she likes to hang around and get attention. She would love to have her own home and the chance at a wonderful life.

2. Boo Boo

• Boo Boo is a sweet little guy who needs to learn the same manners as any puppy would. He is a happy boy, loves to cuddle and is very playful. We are unsure of his breed, but whatever it is, he is very cute! He is housetrained, cratetrained and is learning to walk on a leash. Boo Boo likes dogs and cats, although will chase cats as a game outside. He is good with kids, too. He loves to play with the other dog his size here. I think he would prefer not to be in a household with a lot of giant breed dogs who overwhelm him!! Can you give that to him?? UPDATE: Boo Boo is such a great dog! We are surprised that he is still here with us. Please, Plese consider adopting him before he is here so long that he thinks this is his permanent home!

3. Blondie

• Blondie is a laugh a minute! She is full of energy and personality. She loves all dogs once she gets to know them and realizes they aren't going to hurt her (they're all bigger than she is here). At first, she will run and hide under the deck. Then once she comes out and does the meet 'n' greet, she is full of play, play, play! Blondie is good with the cats inside, but will chase them outside. It is a game, and not to hurt them. She loves children. Blondie is a little fearful of new things, but once she forms a bond with her person, she trusts them to introduce her to new things. She loves to play with stuffed toys and chew on kongs! Blondie is able to dig out of the bottom of a fence, so will need a secure fence to contain her. Please consider making this little girl a member of your family! This sweet little baby was one day away from dying in a Greenville, SC gas chamber before being rescued by CSCAGDR. Her breed is a guess. We have no idea what she really is. Whatever it is, she sure is cute! Blondie is an explorer and sometimes finds herself in a bit of trouble :) She has lots of energy and loves to play. She came to us with sarcoptic mange and huge scabs full of pus on her elbows. She is now healthy and ready to go to her forever home.

4. Cody

• CSCAGDR has recently discovered that Cody has the ability to alert prior to a seizure. We believe he could be a great asset to someone in the future. However, we do not feel that he has been socialized enough to enter a seizure alert dog program. We are looking for a temporary foster home for him that has the time to socialize him and take him to some obedience classes. His foster home would need to have at least a 6' fence. 5. Charlene

• Charlene was found on the road with her mama. She was about hairless from mange and had collapsed and was unable to get up. Our volunteer could not get mama into her car, so she wrapped Charlene in a blanket and brought her quickly to rescue. We could not really tell much about her breed, as she was hairless, but since she had purple on her tongue with figured she was a Chow or Chow Mix. As she began to recover, it was clear that Chow was a wrong guess. She has a wrinkly little forehead under her new hair, and her hair/body shape tell us that she is likely a German Shephard/Shar Pei Mix. While we don't know for sure what breed she is, we do know that she is one of the NICEST dogs we have ever had in rescue. She is mellow, does not demand tons of attention, and is very loving. Charlene gets along well with dogs, cats and people. She will make a lucky someone a wonderful companion. Charle

6. Maya

• Maya was found dumped on the side of the road by a bridge over a river. Apparently, her entire litter was thrown over the bridge into the river, and Maya somehow managed not to go over. She also managed not to get hit by a car on the highway where the bridge is. When found, Maya was about a pound and a half, covered with fleas, dehydrated and VERY CUTE! Maya is a busy girl who would do best if she had a job. She is very smart, and will do well when she has some training. Maya's current owner was not very responsible, and did not provide regular training or leash walks. As a result, Maya was left to find activities on her own, and often got into trouble in the trash, digging out, and barking at cars or animals passing by. Maya loves to snuggle and is very loving. With training and attention, she will be a wonderful dog, especially with children. Maya wants to please and would like the chance to be a good dog. Can you give her that chance?

7. Gemini

• Gemini has suffered years of neglect. Then, she was turned into the shelter for euthanasia. We went to get her and found a skinny, scared girl with parasites and heartworms. She even had adult demodex, which is only gotten from malnutrition and living in filth. When you would try to touch Gemini anywhere near the head or ear, she would let out a low growl, and if you didn't stop, she would raise her lips at you. Her reaction was clearly a fear of being hurt. Now that we have had Gemini a bit and she has seen what it is to live with love and a loving touch, she has just blossomed! People who saw her when she first arrived cannot even believe she is the same dog!! She is so sweet and loving. She loves having her ears rubbed and will come and sit in front of you and give you her paw so you will scratch her chest! She is a true love! Gemini has filled out, and is healthy except for her heartworms. She is low positive and is just on preventive. She is getting healthy enough to be spayed and is ready for adoption. She will make a wonderful addition to any home looking for some extra love and sweetness. Please come take a look at her today!

8. Penny

• Miss Penelope Pittie is one of two pitbull puppies who were dumped in the woods near us. Neighbors brought 6 week old Penny to me, emaciated, full of worms and fleas, and with bloody diarrhea. She responded well to deworming and began eating well and putting weight on within a couple of days. This was a good thing, because on her 4th day, neighbors brought us her sister who was in much worse condition. Penny is now about 6 months old. She is spayed, vaccinated, and heartworm negative. She is very sweet - loves people and gets along well with other dogs. She also lives with 5 cats.

9. Prudence

• Miss Prudence PIttie was in terrible condition, she could not stand, was horribly emaciated - nothing more than skin and bones, actually - and was frightfully cold. After getting her into heated blankets with hot packs, her temperature was 97 degrees! Her gums were STARK white... I have never seen gums so white - not a hint of blood in them. Even the insides of her ears were white. Warm fluids, hot blankets and a space heater right next to her helped to raise her temp, but it still took a couple of days to get her back to a normal temperature range. Deworming helped her to be able to absorb the food she was getting, which, at first, had to be syringed into her. Liver and B-vitamins helped and transfusion was discussed. 20 days later, she has light pink gums and is on her way to health. She has gained weight, and, while she will never be as big as Penny, she is "porking up" now! She loves to play, but is milder mannered than Penny. Pru loves to be near her human mama and sleeps under the covers! She is grateful and happy to be alive! Pru is now about 6 months old. She is spayed, vaccinated, and heartworm negative.
