CAS & Pet Helpers Launch $50 Spay/Neuter Surgery Collaboration
Today, Charleston Animal Society and Pet Helpers announced a partnership in an effort to spread awareness of the importance of spay/ neuter in the Charleston area. With this partnership, the organizations announced the development of the Pet Protector program, which will encourage owners to bring in their pet to be fixed for a low flat fee of $50 until December 2011.
The slogan for the program is "Fix it for $50" and we at Lowcountry Dog Magazine like the sound of that. Though pet adoption is important, we can't adopt ourselves out of pet overpopulation. We must reduce the number of new litters born each year, and this low cost program will be instrumental in doing just that!
“Most people don’t realize that these organizations offer high quality, low fee procedures,” said Joe Elmore, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) senior director community initiatives. “Both organizations have specialized surgeons and state-of-the-art operating rooms to ensure that pets are well taken care of during the procedure.”
The spay/ neuter of all pets is an important step each pet owner should take to not only protect their pet’s health, but help control the pet population. With this procedure, we are able to decrease the suffering of animals by preventing unwanted litters, thereby decreasing the need for euthanasia. Last year, 5,407 dogs and cats were put down in Charleston County. That's equivalent to 15 dogs and cats everyday. By owners getting their pet spay/ neutered, they are saving lives.
“Pet overpopulation is an issue we are faced with everyday and adoption isn’t enough,” said Kay Hyman, Charleston Animal Society director of marketing and public relations. “Getting pets fixed is not only better for their health, but it an important step to control the population and keep happy pets in happy homes,”
“This partnership came naturally since we deal with the same issues when it comes to pet population,” said Lauren Lipsey at Pet Helpers. “We want to do everything we can to help people understand how important this issue is, and the Pet Protector program will do just that.”
The Pet Protector program is about awareness of the issue and provides incentives for owners to bring in their pet. As a part of the Pet Protector program, when bringing in a pet to be spayed/ neutered, the procedure will be offered at a flat fixed rate of $50. This fixed fee will be valid through December 2011. Pet owners will also receive a Pet Protector Savings booklet. The savings in this booklet will include coupons and deals from area retailers. The booklet will, in turn, help cover some of the costs of the procedure and supplies through valuable discounts on food, grooming, toys and other pet products.

I have momma cat and daddy and their 4 babies that have been living under our storage container for the past 3 weeks that we've know. Momma was emaciated and we started feeding them. My worry now is these 6 will become 600 quite soon. I dont' mind feeding them because obviously their owner's don't care enough to do it but also aren't responsible enough to care of them and have them spay and neutered. We need to capture them, somehow as momma is obviously a farrow cat and is quite mean. Daddy must have been someones pet or is someone's pet but have become our responsibility. I feel it is my responsibility to have them spay and neutered to avoid a bigger problem in the near future. Any suggestions. I dont' mind feeding them but don't want to add anymore to the pet population.
