Leah has asked me to comment further on peanut butter.
Although dogs and cats will eat peanut butter, and it is
commonly eaten by them in treats, etc. it should never be
fed to dogs and cats:
-Peanut butter can contain food-
poisoning bacteria, ex: Salmonella. Two recalls of peanut
butter have occurred in the past year to the best of my
knowledge, because of food poisoning bacterial contamination.
- In addition, peanut butter can contain
fungal toxins, chemicals that are produced by fungal
growth in the peanut butter, that are poisons. This is
especially true in unrefrigerated jars.
-because of dogs and cats smaller body size and some
differences in their digestion (compared to people),
they are more easily affected by food poisoning bacteria,
or fungal toxins, causing illness (gastritis, gastroenteritis, diarrhea for example).Dr Amy Cousino
